2013 Ford Escape Hype Hits Fever Pitch

As of today, almost every major news source has picked up and extolled the virtues of Ford’s 2013 Escape. During an official unveiling at the LA Auto Show, automotive journalists and enthusiasts alike were treated to a huge array of information and sexy ad posturing. The trouble is, this latest Escape sort of downgrades the things about the former Escape which we’ve all come to know and love. Sure, the 2013 version looks refreshed, more modern, and offers superior gas mileage, but what happened to the Escape’s rugged, boxy look? What happened to a mini-SUV that made us feel like going on holiday?

Now we’re stuck with a CUV, strongly resembling the Ford Focus, which looks best navigating the crowded supermarket parking lot. There are some good points though…

Cons aside, Ford has thoroughly updated the Escape’s technology and mechanical offerings. The standard engine will be a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder, producing 168 hp and 167 lb.-ft. of torque. The mid-range model offers a slightly more powerful 1.6-liter EcoBoost and the range tops off with Ford’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine which mysteriously finds 237 hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque from a four-cylinder. In addition, drivers can expect up to five miles per gallon in greater fuel efficiency over the outgoing model – although official EPA estimates are unavailable at the moment – and a big upgrade in mobile device integration with Ford’s latest MyFord Touch system.

“We call our all-new Ford Escape the ‘Smarter Utility Vehicle’ because it offers the strengths that customers today really value – fuel economy, versatility and new technology that makes driving and living with the vehicle easier and more fun – all wrapped in a sleek, more modern design,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “Ford understands that more people every year are looking at vehicles like Escape, and we want to give them even more reasons to buy.”

In sum, the Escape does have some highlights. Although no official price has been announced, there is no question that the Ford Escape will remain a popular model…especially given that we’re talking about a vehicle which is considered America’s best-selling SUV. But, how much of that success was attributed to the outgoing model’s strengths or looks? This newest Ford Escape has some big pants to fill, perhaps greater fuel economy, tech improvements, and sassier looks will carry the day.
