Press Release: Mercedes-Benz's New ML 63 AMG Arrives

The new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG is more of a high-performance SUV - and rightly so, if you look at the horsepower figures. The standard engine is the AMG 5.5-liter V8 bi-turbo engine with an output of 525hp - which is 15hp more than last year’s model. And if that isn’t enough, there is the AMG Performance package which puts out 557hp.

The new ML 63 AMG comes with an interesting technology package: the engine features spray-guided direct fuel injection with piezo injectors, ECO start/stop system, an all-aluminum crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-water charge air cooling and generator management. With a displacement of 5461cc, the eight-cylinder engine generates a maximum power output of 525 hp. Engine dry weight is 449 lbs.

If the customer wants more power, AMG raised the maximum charge pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar which nets 557hp. So the standard engine will hit 0-62 mpg in 4.8 seconds, but the AMG Performance package will hit the same number in 4.7 seconds - not really worth talking about. Still, certain people will want all that is available. Top speed for both versions is 155 mph and that is electronically limited.

The AMG Performance package further includes an engine cover in high-quality real carbon, brake calipers in painted red, and an AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather/Dinamica.

All ML 63s use the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission which is connected to an AWD system. The transmission features three driving programs and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting.

The Mercedes-AMG also deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive which distributes the engine power at a ratio of 40/60 to the front and rear axle. In addition, the AMG sports suspension with Airmatic package, air suspension, independent damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) feature for the first time, the Active Curve System for active roll stabilization.

This system, which comes as standard, uses active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to compensate the body's roll during cornering. In addition, the system also improves driving stability for added safety at higher speeds. The driver is able to choose at the push of a button between the three driving modes "Comfort", "Sport" and "Manual."

The ML 63 AMG comes standard with 5-spoke 9x20” light-alloy painted titanium grey wheels using 265/45 R 20 tires with optional 10x21” wheels using 295/35 R 21 tires. The AMG high-performance braking system features perforated 390x36 (front) and 345x26 (rear).

The standard leather upholstery includes contrasting double topstitching and AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats. Dashboard, armrests and door paneling in AMG-specific design are finished in Artico man-made leather with double topstitching.

Other standard equipment includes:

AMG door sills in stainless steel

AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs

Audio 20 CD radio with Bluetooth and USB interface

Tire pressure monitoring system

Electric sliding glass roof

Heated seats for driver and front passenger

Exclusive optional extras are also available from the AMG Performance Studio and the new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG will be launched in April 2012.
