Aston Martin Hits One Million Facebook Fans, Will Build Fan-Inspired Car

Aston Martin has used its fame and prestige within the exotic car segment to rack up a million Facebook fans. To show these loyal Facebookers that an Aston Martin fanship is more than just Aston spam plastered on your wall, the automaker is doing a unique promotion: It's building a crowdsourced Millionth Fan Car.

Aston's version of crowdsourcing will be a little less ambitious than the model innovated by Local Motors. Aston will ask its fans a series of questions. Based on their answers, it will select an existing model, color and options for the one-off model. So you won't actually get to design anything new the way the Web-based team behind the Rally Fighter did.

Still, it's a fun promotion that will give the average social media user the chance to have their say on what a prestigious automaker is working on.

Now if Aston really wanted to generate some Facebook buzz, it would give the Millionth Fan Car away in some type of contest. That would sure get me to "like" Aston pretty quickly. Instead, Aston will build the car and take it on its public tour. And I'm guessing it'll eventually sell the car to some rich buyer that likes bespoke sports cars. The whole "Hey you can design a car that you'll never get to own" (I doubt all million fans are past, present or future Aston owners) seems a bit of a tease and missed opportunity for an exotic brand to really connect with people beyond its core demographic while building major buzz, if you ask me.

You may not have a chance at the car, but for a limited time, you can get the 'Aston Martin Experience' iPhone app for the discounted rate of $.99 (yay?). The app features information on the world's best driving roads, telemetry and an on-board camera.

PRESS RELEASE

Gaydon, Warwickshire, 14 November 2011. Aston Martin has launched a commemorative campaign to celebrate hitting the company’s one millionth ‘fan’ on social networking site, facebook.

Fans of the brand will be given the unique opportunity to help design a special one-off Aston Martin by answering a series of questions on the social networking site, the most popular answers deciding the specification for the Millionth Fan Car. Starting with the model itself, fans will then be able to explore the full potential of Aston Martin bespoke craftsmanship capabilities by choosing from an extensive choice of interior leather trims, finishes and stitches before selecting an exterior colour scheme, a number of which have been created specifically for this car by the Aston Martin Design team.

As a thank you for taking part in the campaign, Aston Martin will send each participant a downloadable certificate of the final design. The chosen car and design will be built at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters in March and then be showcased at a host of public events during the course of 2012.

Aston Martin’s facebook following has grown exponentially since the British marque joined the social networking site in 2009, with fans growing by 280,000 in the last six months alone, buoyed by interest in new cars such as Rapide, Virage, Cygnet and the One-77 supercar, plus expansion into new regions including India and South America where there is a growing interest in the brand. As the company approaches the one million mark, the number of users has been growing at a rate of over 5,000 per week.

Fans comprise an international cross-section of owners, enthusiasts and a strong community of brand aspirants who are afforded a real time insight into the brand via the company’s facebook page.

To support the campaign, for a limited time Aston Martin will be reducing the price of the innovative ‘Aston Martin Experience’ iPhone app from £3.49 to the special offer price of £0.69. Featuring retina display graphics, a guide to the world’s top driving roads, telemetry and an on-board camera, the app works in any car and has features for in the city and even at home.

Aston Martin ‘Experience’ is developed with the same ethos with which Aston Martin design and engineer their cutting edge road and race cars. The technology featured in the marque’s latest App has been designed to meet the exceptional standards of engineering, luxury and quality synonymous with the iconic British marque, including guides to over 40 of the world’s most exciting cities developed in conjunction with ‘A Hedonist’s GuidesTM.’ The Aston Martin Experience app is available to download from iTunes now.

The past decade has seen Aston Martin transformed from a small-scale manufacturer of specialist sports cars to one of the world’s best-known luxury brands, boasting its strongest ever line-up. From the breathtaking One-77 supercar and the elegant yet brutal V12 Zagato to the Tailor-Fit luxury city car, the Cygnet, from the powerful Vantage range and new Virage to the exquisite DB9, DBS and Rapide, every Aston Martin expresses the core values of Power, Beauty and Soul.

You would think they would do a little more than let fans give them i ideas to design a car. I agree with the article if they would actually give the car away in a contest than ya i would be a fan too.
