McLaren MP4-12C = The Eco Supercar?

Okay, eco supercar is definitely a bit far. A moniker like that only belongs on something truly inspired like the Porsche 918 Spyder or Jaguar C-X75, and depending on how the numbers pan out, maybe not even them. But unlike its competitors, the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C is not subject to the U.S. gas guzzler tax, so in its own little way, McLaren is doing something for Mother Nature.

McLaren's EPA rating of 15 city and 22 highway isn't exactly competitive with mainstream cars, but according to reports, the car will not be subject to a gas guzzler tax. Competitors like the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo are subject to the tax.

I'm curious if the EPA's statement was a mistake, because the tax is designed for cars that have less than 22.5 mpg combined. The McLaren gets an 18 mpg combined, well below that standard. In the past, cars like the Aston Martin DB9 and Dodge Viper have had better combined fuel economy and still been subject to the tax.

Unless I'm missing some small print, I'd expect the EPA to come out and say that the MP4-12C is indeed subject to the tax and it was an inadvertent omission.

Tax or not, I doubt buyers of a $229,000, 592-hp, V8-powered supercar are going to be all that concerned about fuel economy or an extra thousand bucks or two.

The 2012 MP4-12C will hit the U.S. market early next year. About 500 units will be sold here.
