Audi Urban Concept May See Production

When Audi introduced its Urban Concept before the Frankfurt Motor Show, it appeared like a concept in the strictest definition of the term. Audi called it a "technology study" and it didn't look like anything we'd imagine driving around city streets. In other words, it didn't appear to have a prayer at seeing production.

However, production may actually happen. Car magazine reported last week that Audi is not only considering, but close to approving, a limited production run.

According to the British publication, Audi is thinking of producing about 999 Urban Concept models beginning in 2013. A price of 10,000 euros ($14,000) is being tossed around, and we'd imagine Audi will sell this exclusively in Europe.

Despite having four wheels, the Urban Concept is more like a scooter or personal transporter than a car in a lot of ways. It has a tiny powertrain of about 20 to 40 hp drawing power from a lithium-ion battery pack. It travels only around 30 miles per charge and accelerates up to around 62 mph.

Basically, the Urban Transporter would be good for short trips like traveling from your apartment on city outskirts to your office downtown. With its short range and low top speed, it wouldn't be suited to highway travel or long commutes. In fact, you probably wouldn't even want to travel between neighboring towns with it.

In addition to its light powertrain, Audi keeps the concept at 1,058 lbs. using a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer body and CFRP/aluminum monocoque. The tiny, short car opens up to a driver and passenger with a retractable roof that allows them to get in comfortably. The seats are situated in a staggered 1+1-style configuration.

Not everyone is particularly sold on vehicles like this, but apparently Audi nearly is.
