Videos That Rock: Freestyle Motorcycling The French Alps

Freestyle motorcycling too often gets a rep of contrived stunts in front of drunken fans in a big arena on 'Sunday, Sunday, Sunday'. Not that any of that is necessarily bad, but it's not all you can do with a bike. After all, "freestyle" indicates a lack of boundaries and a bit of imagination.

Ride the World Productions take us worlds away from the dirt and mud of the arena, bringing motorcycling to one of the most beautiful natural environments in the world: the French Alps. What ensues is a captivating film that redefines "freestyle motorcyling" for casual fans like myself.

I'm not really a big off-road motorcycle guy, but I am a mountain biker. And I'd much rather watch mountain bikers tackle powerful, beautiful mountains than throw tricks down in a bike park. I think that puts me in the minority, since all of the hype around mountain biking (and motorcycling) tends to be focused on big air and big tricks, but I just feel there's something missing, especially for a video feature. Natural landscapes are much more photogenic than manmade ones.

I think that The Paramount Ride makes that clear. Freestyle riders Arthur Coutard and Julien Dupont take us on a journey that includes powering through muddy forest creek beds, pulling flips and tricks in the foreground of snow-covered mountains, and bouncing off natural rock. The greater film really capitalizes on the majestic beauty of this mountaintop motorcycle playground both during and in between motorcycle shots.

If more of motorcycle culture was like this, I'd be a huge fan.
