Subaru BRZ STI Concept Unveiled

Well, here's a slight surprise. After pictures purporting to be the production Toyota FT-86 leaked last week, I was expecting Toyota to introduce the car rather quickly before any more damage could be done. Instead, more damage was done in terms of leaked specs, and Subaru actually beat Toyota to the punch in unveiling its version of the same car.

Actually, Subaru is just now catching up with Toyota because this BRZ STI is actually the concept version, which it will show in the metal at the LA Auto Show. But with mere weeks separating the LA Auto Show from the Tokyo Motor Show, where both Subaru and Toyota will officially debut their respective production coupes, the BRZ concept should be a spitting image of the production model.

The course of the week's Toyota/Subaru events is a chapter of a longer book that has read much the same way. Toyota has been dragging things out, showing four different concepts over two years, while Subaru has lagged behind, showing nothing more than powertrains. Subaru will now rush to show both a full concept and a production model within weeks of each other.

The BRZ STI takes much the same shape and look as the FT-86, but adds some Subaru design elements like that big rear wing. When compared to the leaked production FT-86, the front-end looks much the same, but the fenders are more muscular and defined and the grille a little sharper and larger. The car also looks more powerful, thanks to those big rear haunches, rear wing, and quad exhaust tips.

Subaru appears to be saving the official details for one of the auto show debuts, but we do know the car has a low center of gravity and should put out 200+ horses from its boxer four-cylinder.

The LA Auto Show opens to the media on November 16, so we'll have some more info soon enough.

Hopefully it'll look more modern in person. It just looks a little dull - except for that rear fascia and exhaust.

The Subaru looks a little plain for my liking. I like the wheels and everything like that but maybe its the color it just seems ugly to me. Maybe in person it will look a little better.
