Motor Trend Crowns Evoque 'SUV Of The Year'

Motor Trend has recently announced that the brand-new 2012 Range Rover Evoque has received the company’s coveted designation as Sport/Utility of the Year. To those in the know, the Evoque’s sudden popularity will come as no surprise. We’re talking about a completely new SUV design featuring the smallest, lightest, and most fuel efficient Range Rover tech ever sent into mass production. And, to compound this latest Range Rover’s victory points, the Evoque is priced very competitively within the small luxury SUV market—making this a vehicle which is sure to stimulate some kind of enthusiastic response.

Since time immemorial the good folks at Motor Trend have arduously tested new vehicles in the pursuit of finding the best of the best. In order to win, candidates for Motor Trend’s analysis must achieve high scores under six criteria: advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, value, and performance of intended function.

Available in two versions, a coupe or five-door, the Evoque has starting MSRPs of $44,995 and $43,995 respectively. While the two models are nearly identical in dimensions, the five-door version gets another 1.18 inches in roof height.

Since US versions of the Evoque come only with Land Rover’s legendary AWD system paired to a 240 horsepower turbocharged engine, you might expect poor or average fuel economy. But no, the Evoque achieves 19 mpg in the city and up to 28 on the highway—pretty impressive for a luxury SUV.

“The Range Rover Evoque is a bold move into the fast-growing compact luxury SUV sector,” claimed Angus MacKenzie, Editor-in-Chief, Motor Trend. “Refined and capable both on and off the road, it artfully combines traditional Range Rover values with stunning state-of-the-moment design and impressive efficiency. The Evoque is a worthy winner of our award, and I have no doubt it will be a worldwide hit for Land Rover.”

Check out the official Motor Trend video below for a snapshot of some of the Evoque’s finer characteristics. It’s a good bet that we can expect big things from Land Rover in the next decade, especially with a brand-new (although delayed) Defender slotted for production. Will consumer demand match enthusiast interest? With Motor Trends’ stamp of approval and total overhauls in the model lineup, Land Rover has the right mix of publicity and substance. Let’s hope new vehicle reliability follows suit.
