Tokyo-Bound Mazda Takeri Concept Previews Next Mazda6

Mazda has released its first picture of the upcoming Takeri concept. Not to be confused with the sporty Shinari concept (which could rhyme depending upon how you're reading the names in your head), the Takeri is a mid-sized concept that previews the next-generation Mazda6. It will make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.

Mazda's "Kodo Soul of Motion" design language translates quite well into a mid-sized sedan, if we do say so. While we don't expect the production Mazda6 to be quite this sporty, the Kodo is strong in this one, with the defined front fenders and curvy belt line conveying a clear sense of motion. The rearward-oriented cabin is also an eye-pleaser, and though I've never been a fan of Mazda's big, smiley grilles, this one doesn't blend half bad.

Though it looks extra powerful, the Takeri is quite efficient, thanks to a host of Skyactiv technologies like clean turbodiesel engine, engine start-stop system, and regenerative braking system. The engine, a 173-hp 2.2-liter turbodiesel, is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

The production Mazda6 is expected to debut next spring and hit the market by the end of the year.

In addition to the Takeri concept, Mazda will debut the 2012 CX-5 crossover at the Tokyo show.

The Tokyo Motor Show opens to the press on November 30.
