BMW M Division To Build Its Own Supercar?

It looks like we have a little German envy. BMW M engineers are looking at their counterparts over at Mercedes AMG and thinking "Why can't we do that?" By "that", they mean develop their own supercar, the way that AMG did with the SLS AMG. BMW M is a little tired of just improving upon existing vehicles and wants to get the green light to build a car all its own.

M and AMG are the high-performance divisions of their respective companies. Both divisions develop sporty, high-performance versions of existing models, but only AMG has been given the reins of its own car-development project. And AMG came through with flying colors, building the gull-winged SLS AMG, which is clearly Mercedes' sportiest, sexiest coupe.

In a conversation with Autocar, M division product development chief Albert Biermann said that he wants his team to be given that very same latitude.

Biermann said: "From an engineering perspective, we have the skills and we’d love to do it. We’ve discussed it several times but we’ve never been able to make the business case. Everything we do has to make money."

The M1 supercar built between 1978 and 1981 was the first M-badged car and the only M-badged car that was not simply a high-performance version of an existing BMW model. However, that car was not developed by the M division, but with the help of other players including Lamborghini (chassis and driving dynamics) and Italdesign Giugiaro (body). The M1 Homage (pictured) was a design study built in 2008 to celebrate the 20th birthday of the original M1.

In addition to wanting the go-ahead for its own bespoke car, the M division also wants to get its hands on the Z4 roadster for a Z4M. However, a firm business case is lacking there, too.

It would be awesome if BMW made a sports car. It always seems that they have the same cars every year and they just look different. They would probably make good money cause every one is in to the new look of cars these days!
