Audi E-tron Spyder Out In The California Sun (Video)

If you had to scout the perfect location for filming a plug-in sports convertible, it would most certainly be California. Not only is the Golden State a permanent launch pad for all cars electric, it's a sunny state with beautiful vistas of all kinds—kind of the ultimate spot to take an open-top e-roadster. And if you had to select a spot within the large state of California, you couldn't do much better than Malibu, a scenic coastal utopia.

Well, Audi follows that very logic and recently released a video of the e-tron Spyder tackling the coastal hillsides of Malibu.

The e-tron Spyder originally launched at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Unlike previous e-tron models, which were electric, the Spyder is a diesel-electric hybrid with a twin-turbo TDI V-6 out back and a pair of electric motors up front. The combination provides up to 388-hp and 664 lb-ft of torque while keeping its 3,200 lbs. balanced in a perfect 50:50 front-rear ratio.

The e-tron Spyder boasts 31 miles of all-electric range (about the same as the Fisker Karma) and around 107 mpg overall while still offering a very quick 4.4-second 0-to-62-mph run. Top speed is electronically cut off around 155 mph.

The Spyder also looks pretty damn sexy with its frameless wraparound windshield; narrow, boomerang-LED headlights; and beaming grille. Combine that car with the glint of California sun, and you have a great two minutes worth of video. Check it:
