BMW MicroNavigation To Build On GPS

As much of a boon as GPS has been, there's definitely room for it to improve. Adding more accuracy, more updated infrastructure information and points of interest and gaining more information about roads themselves are a few of the ways I could see GPS improving. I imagine one day in the future, GPS will be able to automatically tell you when the speed limit changes, warn you of pot holes or impending hazards and help you navigate your way around shopping complexes and other micro systems.

BMW, which has been just teeming with technology lately, provided a look at one of the new features that it will use to enhance the functionality of its navigation systems. Another aspect of ConnectedDrive, it's called microNavigation and it will help to make your drive as efficient as possible.

Instead of just getting you from point A to point B, microNavigation will home in on your drive and help you commute more efficiently. For instance, it will use a camera system to determine which lane of traffic is moving most quickly, prompting you to change lanes. So there's no more Office Space moments of constantly switching into the wrong lane.

The system can also automatically reserve a parking spot at your destination (assuming the facility is open to reservations), eliminating the need to drive around in search of a space. It also tags your space on your smartphone so that you can easily find it when you get back.

In short, microNavigation will make your entire commuting process as efficient and hassle-free as possible.

Earlier this week, I detailed a raft of other technologies in the ConnectedDrive family. Some technologies that will work in conjunction with microNavigation include intelligent route planning, which you can think of as the navigation system that never sleeps. The technology is constantly analyzing traffic data to help you get where you need to go. BMW even says that it can send you a message on your phone if traffic is backed up and you need to get driving early.

Another ConnectedDrive technology, proactive connectivity sounds very similar to microNavigation in that it uses traffic data to analyze what's going on about two miles ahead. It can then prompt you to do things like speed up to catch the traffic light while it's green.
