2012 New BMW 3-Series

Well, it finally happened! The sixth 3-Series from BMW will hit our shores in February 2012. Of course, the new BMW will be restyled but still remains looking like a BMW should with all the usual BMW styling cues, especially the kidney grilles in the front. After all, the BMW 3-Series is the bread and butter of the entire BMW line.

The sixth generation BMW is slightly larger: 3.66 in. longer, with a longer wheelbase, 1.96. in. The noticeable increase in space is definitely a positive change, especially for larger passengers. Given the fact that the car is larger, it actually weighs 88 lbs. less than its predecessor.

The 3-Series is available as a Sport Line, M Sport Package, Luxury Line and Modern Line.

The Sport Line consists of eye-catching exterior features in high-gloss black, including eight heavily contoured high-gloss black kidney grille slats to give the car a sport look. The black inserts in the front apron make the air intakes appear larger and lend extra emphasis to the muscular wheel arches. 18-inch light-alloy wheels and black accents further the Sport Line. The interior is accented by contrasting black and red accents.

The M Sports Package comes with 18- or 19-inch M Design wheels, an aerodynamics package, M Sport suspension, M short-shifter, and various M branding.

The Luxury Line is accented by the use of chrome elements, and the BMW kidney grille has 11 fine chrome slats, two slightly offset chrome trim strips in the front apron air intakes, and a high-gloss chrome trim strip running horizontally above the air scoop to give the front a striking appearance. Special 18-inch wheels are used and this is the only line which gives the radio and air conditioning units a chrome surround. High-gloss wood trim and leather seats are also standard.

The 3-Series Modern Line is accented in satin aluminum. The BMW kidney grille has 11 satin aluminum slats, and double trim strips for the air intakes in the same color to give the front end of the new BMW 3-Series Sedan a modern look. Other features include: 18-inch turbine-style light-alloy wheels, leather upholstery in oyster or black, and a choice of three trim surfaces are utilized in the interior.

The BMW 335i xDrive and BMW 328i xDrive all-wheel-drive models will go on sale in summer 2012.

The standard engine is the new BMW, the TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder, has a displacement of 2.0 liters/1,997 cc and is rated a 240hp @ 5,000 rpm with torque of 260 lb.-ft. @ 1,250-4,800 rpm. The BMW 328i accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds on its way to an electronically governed top speed of 130 mph (155 mph with Sport Line).

Optional is the BMW 335i inline 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine with a power rating of 300hp @ 5,800 rpm, and torque of 300 lb-ft, @1,200-5,000 rpm. The new BMW 335i can hit 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

BMW will add another engine to the line-up in 2012 when the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will premiere.

Part of the BMW EfficientDynamics technology line-up is the Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, and the need-based operation of auxiliary components (including an on-demand air conditioning compressor) play their part in reducing fuel consumption. The new Driving Dynamics Control switch, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Sport, Sport + and ECO PRO mode, also gives both models the potential to further improve these figures.

Both 3-Series are available with either the 8-speed automatic transmission which includes the new Auto Start-Stop function or the standard six-speed manual.

In addition to the lightweight suspension components, the optional Variable Sports Steering in available for even more precise steering.

The 3-Series comes with a host of additional items and features; one thing is sure - the 3-Series is bound to continue being the best sedan available in 2012.
