300-HP Turbo Range Rover Evoque Planned

Do you like the small size and updated looks of Land Rover's smallest vehicle ever but find yourself yearning for a little extra power? Land Rover's got you covered. Or at least it might if this new rumor comes true. Land Rover is reportedly working on a "hot" version of the Range Rover Evoque, which would add a high-pressure turbocharger to the 2.0-liter engine for up to around 300 horses of power.

According to Autocar, the upgraded Evoque may lead to an entire Range Rover performance sub-brand since it's struggling to find a place to market the car. Currently, upgraded versions of Range Rover models are simply called 'supercharged', a designation that doesn't fit in this case. So Land Rover may spin-off a performance sub-brand like BMW's M or Mercedes-Benz's AMG divisions. If that happens, expect to see more hot versions of Range Rover SUVs, since you don't really make an entire sub-brand for one car.

The current Evoque, which bases at around $44,000, uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine derived from Ford's Ecoboost. That engine puts out 240-hp. The model delivers fuel economy of 28 mpg highway and 19 mpg city.

Land Rover execs are currently testing out a prototype with the 300-hp unit, but have yet to give the model the official green light.
