Poop Powered Bike, Never Leave The Throne Again

As Japanese toilets become increasingly bacteria free, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing, one toilet manufacturer seeks to produce the ultimate human waste receptacle. TOTO, Japan’s largest toilet maker, aims to halve their CO2 emissions in bathrooms by 2017. In support of that, the company issued the TOTO Green Challenge which features a 600-mile cross-country tour via a toilet-powered motorcycle nicknamed Neo. By toilet-powered, we mean BioGas. And by BioGas, we mean feces.

Neo is a motorcycle powered completely by human excrement. The vehicle finds fuel in noxious fumes converted from the driver’s recently deployed bombs—giving new meaning to our previous notions of bathroom availability. Indeed, provided the driver has absolutely no shame, she can literally go whenever and wherever she wants. In this case, our hypothetical driver is female simply because TOTO chose a female to drive their waste harvester across Japan! Let’s hope that jumpsuit has a rear hatch.

Aside from innovative fuel sourcing, Neo has some other nifty keen features. The bike can use residual light imagery to project written messages in the air as it drives by. In addition, Neo can talk or play music as the driver pleases. Perhaps these are functions useful for making constant apologies to fellow motorists—something like writing “excuse me” in the air while playing Garbage’s I’m Only Happy When It Rains or Bombs Over Bagdad by OutKast.

Apparently, TOTO recognizes the fun factor here and plans for the poo-powered bike to make a humorous stop en route. Right after departing from the company’s headquarters in Kitakyushu, Neo will stop at Nakatsu within the Oita prefecture in order to pay homage to a butt-shaped boulder.

While TOTO’s waste machine does seem a bit odd, this is just the kind of thinking that the world needs. Human waste is a viable alternative source of fuel, and one that many countries simply throw away without deriving any public use. Does that mean we should all have poop fueled motorcycles? No, certainly not. However, if our toilets could run and perhaps power other electronic equipment in the house, then we should all be prepared to make do with doo-doo.

Which brings up an important point, in the future we will not be able to waste potential resources. That 30-minute run on the treadmill or 30-minute trip to the head should send power back into some kind of regenerative battery bank as an alternative source of energy for the rest of the house… or, as the case may be, the garage.
