Ferrari 599 Replacement To Break 700 Horses

We already knew that 2012 is set up to be Year of the Ferrari. While Ferrari will be introducing new models over the next few years (like the recent 458 Spider), 2012 will give us an Enzo successor and a 599 GTB successor. Ferrari's two hottest super-coupes making their debut in the same year means a lot of attention will be on Maranello.

We already heard a few details about the Enzo successor recently, and now we have a little info on the 599. Ferrari confirms that the next 599 will push the bar over 700 hp, 80 hp more than the current 599, and about 30 more than the 599 GTO.

In answering a question about the output posed by Car & Driver, Ferrari CEO Amadeo Felisa, sounded somewhat annoyed at first, saying, "We are selling cars, not horsepower."

Felisa then went on to pretend he didn't know what the output of the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4--probably the Ferrari 599 GTB successor's biggest potential rival--was, and told C&D, "We’ll have more than 700 horsepower, but it’s not because of the Aventador."

You can make up your own theory about how much the 80-hp boost does or does not have to do with the new Lambo flagship, but the important takeaway is that the 599 will be right there with it. We knew the 599 was going to have at least 660-hp, because it will share the 6.3-liter V-12 engine with the FF grand tourer, so it's good to know Ferrari's faster two-seater will head north of the ever-important 700 figure (the new Pagani Huayra also offers around 700-hp).

If we had to guess, we'd say that the700+ hp admission suggests the Enzo replacement's output will be closer to 800-hp than 700-hp. Upon launch in 2002, the Enzo had 660-hp, which put it way ahead of the 515-hp 575M Maranello, the 599 predecessor that also launched in 2002. Of course, Ferrari isn't selling horsepower, so that's just a fun exercise in speculation.

We know from the Enzo report, that Ferrari will not go carbon-composite in constructing the 599, something that's currently reserved for models like the Enzo successor. Instead, we can expect the usual aluminum architecture.
