Wanderlust Glory At Overland Expo 2012

Occasionally, an event so exciting, so dramatic, and bizarrely authentic graces the average auto enthusiast’s agenda. As a result, months of planning and preparation go into a single quasi-religious-type migration. For some, that trip might be to the Concours, and for others it could be Indy. But not all gearheads are sated by mere spectator events alone.

Queue: Aaron Copland’s Rodeo.

The Overland Expo, or OX as it’s affectionately called, is an adventurers' carnival: a three-day feast of workshops, exhibitions, and camping, topped off with a travel film festival. Fortunately for us, OX 2012 has been slotted for May 18 -20, leaving ample time to refine our adventuremobiles and work a nice crease into our safari hats.

Located in Coconino National Forest, near Flagstaff, Arizona, Overland Expo 2012 will take place at latitude 34.911442 - longitude 111.467253 (7135 ft.). Why all the fancy geographic numbering instead of a physical address? Because attendees should come prepared to experience the backcountry, and finding this event is just the beginning. The venue makes a perfect launching pad for explorations into the Grand Canyon or Four Corners Backcountry—where relying on coordinates is a must.

Visitors can choose between a few different options, but admission generally costs an a la carte $15/day or $265 for the ultimate Overland Experience package. The package includes admission to all three days, unlimited driving classes/workshops, free camping, daycare, BBQ, happy hour drink tickets, and gift bags. If you’re planning to attend with a larger-than-one group, bulk discounts apply.

The list of workshop sponsors is building quickly. The two most notable additions are Land Rover and BMW; both plan to offer custom-tailored instruction on the all new, totally redesigned overland skills area. In addition to workshops, 100+ exhibitors will line up to promote and sell their goods while experts and authors discuss their wisdom. As the sun sets, Overland Expo goes into high gear with music, food, happy hour, and an adventure travel film festival.

What’s the point? If you love the backcountry, Overland Expo 2012 will perhaps be the most fun automotive event of the year. So fun, in fact, that it’s common for attendees to continue overlanding after the event is over. And why not? Everyone is already in an incredibly ideal spot for mechanized adventure. Event coordinators sum it up best in the official OX Schedule for Monday, May 21: “departures…the adventures begin.”
