2014 Acura NSX Going Hybrid?

2014 Acura NSX Going Hybrid?

In August, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito admitted to the long-rumored NSX revival, adding at the Frankfurt Motor Show that the company is looking to build a new type of NSX with a dramatic power-to-weight ratio. According to new reports, Honda's next-gen NSX will launch in 2014 and may feature a hybrid powertrain.

According to an Auto Express report, the 2014 NSX will combine two Honda projects into one. The car will get design influence from an Acura-badged supercar to appear in the upcoming Avengers movie (spied in NY's Central Park in the picture above). A car similar to the movie car will sit atop an all-wheel-drive, hybrid platform inspired by the 2001 Dual Note 4WD concept, which featured a 3.5-liter V-6 gas engine driving the rear wheels and two, wheel-mounted electric motors up front. The engine and motors combined for around 400 hp in that concept.

In the NSX, Honda will reportedly use a V-6 displacing between 3.5 and 3.7 liters supplemented by a plug-in electric unit with two motors and a lithium-ion battery.

So we have a movie car that an Acura spokesperson has called a one-off, and a 10-year-old hybrid AWD powertrain--doesn't sound like the most believable rumor we've heard yet.

Taking Ito's sound bites from Frankfurt makes the latest rumor doubly dubious. Ito said that the new NSX would have a primary focus on lightweight design, not output, in order to maximize the power-to-weight ratio. While he did mention that Honda wants to make the car "efficient," he suggested that the way it will do so is with a light, aluminum build and small gas engine, not with a hybrid powertrain.

As for the Avengers Acura being the basis of the design, an Acura spokesperson said that the movie car is a "one-off, fictional car that was made just for the movie and will not be produced," according to World Car Fans. While that doesn't necessarily mean that Honda won't borrow some of the car's design language, it doesn't seem to leave the door as open as Auto Express's report suggests.

Rumor puts the pricing around $100,000, making the NSX a potential Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 competitor.
