Lamborghini Sedan/SUV Concept At Geneva Motor Show?

Lamborghini Sedan/SUV Concept At Geneva Motor Show?

Last we checked Lamborghini was pitting a potential SUV against a potential sedan in deciding which model would join the Aventador and Gallardo/Cabrera in its line-up. There's no official word as to which direction Lamborghini will go, but we'll know for sure in a few months.

According to Motor Authority, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann recently said that Lamborghini will announce its decision on a third model early next year. To further tickle our anxiety, Winkelmann said that when Lambo decides, it will have a concept to show. Given the time frame, we take that to mean a concept sedan or SUV at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

Sant'Agata Bolognese needs a more practical model with broader appeal to boost profitability. Small-volume supercars are just not the ticket to a healthy bottom line.

While Lamborghini could come out of left field with a completely new model, it's largely reported that the choice comes down to an SUV/crossover or a sedan. Rumors have been flip-flopping between these two potential # 3s for years, and, in the summer, Car and Driver reported that Lamborghini was testing prototypes of each model in order to make a final decision. That report suggested an October decision time frame and 2015 launch window, but this week's information pushes the announcement back to 2012 and launch back to 2016.

Past reports indicated that Winkelmann was leaning heavily towards a sedan, but Volkswagen executives were in the SUV corner. A report in Australian publication Drive earlier this week suggests the SUV is indeed the front-runner. The SUV won't be a hardcore, off-road model like the Lamborghini LM002, but more of a luxury model with a V-12 and a premium interior.

Since it's believed that Lamborghini already has prototypes of each car built, it isn't surprising that a reveal will follow shortly after (or at the same time) as an announcement.

Ever since a hard-nosed LM002 successor dropped out of the discussion, I haven't been particularly interested in Lambo's third model. It is nice that the speculation will finally cede to an official announcement, though.
