Fred Flintstone Would Be Proud: Pedal-Powered Hyundai Azera

Now that Hyundai has pulled a successful 180 on its image, it can barely build its cars fast enough. When you experience great success, you have a little extra time and money to invest in the finer things in life (though Hyundai might want to think about beefing up its production capacity instead). And sometimes the finer things in life are quirky, fun projects.

Hyundai's China team recently hit the street with a life-sized Hyundai Azera that traded an engine for a pedal-powered drivetrain. Talk all you want about the 40 mpg, this baby is as clean as it gets.

A team of designers built the car out of a tube-steel frame fitted with pedals, gears, and an ultra-long bike chain. Other materials used include plastic, Styrofoam, and vinyl wrap. After putting the model together, the team took it out to the street and surprised some unwitting valets and bystanders.

From the outside, it's pretty convincing (though a little rough around the edges) as an average Azera, but inside, it's all raw frame and hardware.

It's a pretty fun marketing ploy that really makes me wish I had a garage backed by a global auto corporation. I'd love to spend a rainy day building completely unnecessary (but awesome) projects like this.

The first video shows the build and the second shows the team out in the wild with the cycle-car.
