Ferrari 458 Spider Gets Priced

If you took a look at the Ferrari 458 Spider at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show and thought the retractable hard-top would add around $30,000 to the price of the popular, award-winning 458, color yourself correct. Ferrari announced US and European pricing for its latest sporty drop-top, and we're looking at a 15 percent increase over 458 Italia hard-top pricing.

The 2012 458 Spider will hit the US market next January carrying a price tag of $257,000. The 458 Italia is currently priced just over $225,000.

In Europe, the convertible will start at 226,800 euros when it hits the market next month, some $50,000 more expensive than the U.S. version when you take conversion into account.

The 458 Spider is powered by the same 562-hp 4.5-liter V-8 engine and paddle-shift double-clutch gearbox of its head-dressed sibling. Some minor changes from hard-top to convertible include remapped accelerator pedal and suspension damping adjustments.

In place of the more traditional soft-top, Ferrari introduced an all-new retractable hard-top for the model, which cuts weight by more than 50 lbs. and deploys in just 14 seconds. The retractable top was designed to tuck neatly in front of the engine bay without affecting aerodynamics or performance. It also allowed Ferrari to build a rear storage area behind the seats.

The 458 Spider hits 62 mph in 3.4 seconds and tops out around 198 mph.
