Better Than Tesla? Toray Teewave AR.1 Electric Roadster

Gordon Murray Design and Toray Industries have introduced a sporty, electric roadster prototype that gives the Tesla Roadster a run for its money as the hottest electric two-seater around. Of course, the prototype falls rather short when it comes to performance.

Toray Industries, a manufacturer of textiles and composites, commissioned Gordon Murray Design to build a working prototype of the EV highlighting its automotive materials. As such, the car is injected with all kinds of carbon fiber, including a carbon tub, carbon components system, and a carbon front crash structure. The car weighs in at around 1,875 lbs—some 880 lbs. lighter than the Tesla Roadster.

With such a light curb weight, one would expect the Teewave AR.1 to offer some impressive numbers. One would be disappointed. The car's small 47 kW motor gives it "lively acceleration" of 62 mph in 11.4 seconds. The car tops out at 90 mph. Kinda makes you wonder why they gave it such a sporty, muscular physique—false advertising if I've ever seen it.

The car's range is about 115 miles and the 16 kWh lithium-ion pack takes six hours to charge.

Since the powertrain is highly unimpressive, we'll move on to the design. Outside of its undynamic Zonda-like rear fascia, the car looks pretty sexy from what we've seen. It stands on powerful rear haunches and has all the right curves.

Gordon Murray said of the design: "It has been a pleasure to work with Toray Industries' team on this challenging project. The resultant vehicle weight of just 850Kg achieved using Toray's carbon fiber once again proves that performance through light weight is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way to achieve power-to-weight targets."
