Dyson-Mazda Racing Into 2010
The Lola-built LMP2 coupes of Dyson Mazda Racing are arguably the most visually stimulating cars entered in the American Le Mans Series. Good lookin'? Yes. Reliable? Eh, not so much.
Last season saw the Dyson team constantly battling mechanical gremlins - problems with the turbo, fuel delivery issues, overheating . . . when the car ran well however, it was unstoppable. And let's not forget, ravishing.
For 2010 the team has put serious man-hours into engineering a bullet proof racer. Lola has been working on some new tricks as well. Pending IMSA approval, the team will also switch to bio-butanol fuel for both cars . . . busy off season!
The big story here is the switch to an alternative fuel. Bio-butanol has shown itself to be superior to the E10 blend when utilized in the Mazda four banger. Team manager Michael White is sold. "It’s just a better fuel (than the E10 blend)," said White. "It’s less prone to detonation. There were no adverse effects on the internal components." Hopefully, this sort of trouble-free performance will extend into the season, eliminating a large portion of the Lola Coupe's reliability issues. IMSA hasn't officially acknowledged Bio-butanol as an acceptable fuel for the ALMS; Dyson did run it in one of its cars for the last two races of the 2009 season. White believes the fuel will be legalized. "We’re pretty confident that it will be one (an accepted fuel)," said White.
Lola has been working on the car's performance, chassis-wise. Though they were attempting to enter the F1 championship for 2010, the British firm did not ignore the sports car over the lay-off. In fact, some of the bits and pieces developed for the F1 effort may have made their way into the construction of the Lola B09/86 coupes. Lola has hinted that the 2010 spec LMP1 and LMP2s are going to be very special as a result of these upgrades.
"Even though they (Lola) were doing this F1 project in the background, they haven’t stood still on the sports car. They have a raft of upgrades for both P1 and P2 cars. They’ve been working on aero developments, suspension elements, geometry developments, and others. They’re pretty busy. We’ll probably have some of those for the February test," added White during the press conference in Sebring.
Dyson will continue testing the rest of this week and then return in February for the IMSA-sanctioned test. The annual American Le Mans Series Winter Test is scheduled for February 22-23, also at Sebring International Raceway. After Porsche ended their support for the LMP2 RS Spyder, Dyson decided to go with the Mazda-powered Lola coupe.
