2012 DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupe

Well, here’s another good looking race car put out by Mercedes-Benz. Here at Autoshopper.com, we get excited when another Mercedes-Benz product becomes available, even if this isn’t a production car—it is a racer. Actually, the DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé will succeed the AMG Mercedes C-Class, which is the most successful vehicle in the 27-year history of the DTM (touring car racing), having scored 84 victories in 156 races and five driver’s titles.

As you can guess, the C-Coupé is new, and the new car incorporates a state-of-the-art carbon fiber monocoque with a roll cage made of high-strength steel. Moreover, each vehicle is equipped with six energy-absorbing crash body structures, giving the driver additional protection to the front, rear, and sides—really important in case of accident. These carbon fiber crash structures are designed to gradually absorb impact energy, so that the driver is not exposed to high deceleration forces.

Interestingly, for driver protection in the event of an accident, all safety-related components, such as the fire extinguisher system and the fuel tank, have been incorporated into the monocoque.

All the new safety concepts were developed jointly by rights holder and promoter ITR e.V., the DMSB (Deutscher Motor Sport Bund e. V., Germany's motor racing governing body), and the three manufacturersVAudi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. In order to verify the performance of the DTM safety concept, the DMSB developed a test program, which was carried out and analyzed by DEKRA, the independent testing organization. Fortunately, all tests were completed without any problems.

Development, design and manufacture of the new car began in June 2010 at HWA headquarters in Affalterbach, near Stuttgart, Germany. HWA is responsible for production of the cars, including engines. HWA is more commonly known as AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz.

A big hoopla was held for the new car. The well-known Formula One drivers, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg unveiled the new DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé at the recent show held in Frankfurt. In addition, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management at Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Division, and Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, were there as well.

Of course, the real interesting thing about the DTM racer is that it will also be racing in United States next year.

The C-Coupé is powered by a 4.0 liter V-8, and uses four-valves per cylinder for an approximate 500 hp output. With weight, being about 2,314 lbs. with the driver, you can be sure that this is one fast Mercedes-Benz!
