Wireless Sensors

The idea in theory is interesting, but it may cause more harm than good. Starting this fall, San Francisco will test 6,000 of its 24,000 metered spaces, enabling drivers to be notified by street signs or cell phones when a spot becomes available.

While you’re parked, the city could use that real-time information for dynamic meter pricing. You might even be able to add more time to the meter from your phone without returning to your vehicle. Sounds convenient, right? One obvious problem comes to mind though. Alert 30 antsy drivers of a free spot available and hilarity ensues. That is if you’re not the driver.
