VW Jetta Hybrid Coming To Detroit

To state the painfully obvious: auto shows from here on out are bound to be characterized by—if not completely dominated by—hybrids, electrics, and other green concepts. At this year's Frankfurt Motor Show we've seen everything from tiny electric cars that could practically ride on the sidewalk to full-blown electrically powered supercars. And we've also started hearing rumors about the next-generation of auto-show-debuted green vehicles. First the Infiniti range-extending sports car. And now the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid.

Volkswagen will unveil the 2013 Jetta Hybrid at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January. The car will feature a 1.4-liter turbocharged TSI engine, lithium-ion battery, and undetailed electric motor. According to Car and Driver, VW says to expect a sporty, performance-oriented hybrid with some big-time fuel efficiency numbers. Can't argue with that.

Past reports lead us to believe that the hybrid system will be series parallel, capable of offering some level of all-electric driving.

The Jetta Hybrid should hit the US market by late-2012.

In the same Frankfurt-based report, C&D states that Volkswagen will introduce the Beetle convertible at next year's New York Auto Show and has dropped plans for a Jetta coupe.

Now if we could just hear some news about if and when the production Bulli will be debuted, we'd be pretty satisfied with VW for a while.
