Infiniti To Build Range-Extending Sports Car

For most companies, the Frankfurt Motor Show is where the teasing stopped and the full revealing began. But for Infiniti, the Frankfurt Motor Show was the place for teasing its next exciting release. Nissan's luxury arm said that it will be revealing a range-extending hybrid sports car at the Geneva Motor Show next year.

As is fashionable, Infiniti is calling its car an electric sports car, but reports indicate it will have a small gasoline engine serving as a range-extending generator—that would be a series hybrid.

No word on what will power the car, but it will likely borrow some elements from the Nissan Leaf Nismo RC, a one-off racing-spec Leaf that Nissan debuted earlier this year. It sounds as though it will have to drastically revamp the powertrain, since that car featured a stock Leaf electric motor and battery pack—not really powerful enough for an Infiniti sports coupe.

The Infiniti should be more than just a fancy proof of concept; it should be a real-life competitor to other electric and series-hybrid sports cars from smaller shops like Fisker and Tesla. From the sounds of it, it will be more in that range and less of a full-blown supercar like the Porsche 918 Spyder or the Jaguar C-X75. According to Autocar, Infiniti hopes to begin selling it sometime in the middle of the decade.

Just when you thought all the car anticipation was over for a while, we've got a live one...
