New App Simplifies Navigation For GM's OnStar System

Researching and navigating to your destination just got a little easier for GM owners—at least those GM owners whose cars are equipped with OnStar. GM has a brand-new app that makes identifying a destination and programming it into your car more seamless than ever.

A new function of the OnStar RemoteLink app lets OnStar users find addresses via Android and iPhone devices and then send them wirelessly to the navigation system. So instead of having to research the address on your phone and then punch it into the GPS—or wading through the points of interest just hoping the destination you need is listed—you can find the address and zap it with one simplified process. The app lets you store up to five addresses, which can be accessed via voice command.

The new function joins traditional RemoteLink functions like sending vehicle statistics—including oil level, tire pressure and fuel level—from your car to your smartphone. The new function is available as an update for existing RemoteLink users or as part of the app download for new users.

In July, GM renamed the app from OnStar MyLink to provide a better idea of what the app is all about. At the time, the company said that RemoteLink had been downloaded nearly 400,000 times and had resulted in 3.5 million interactions.

The new navigation function joins similar offerings from competitors like Ford and BMW.

For those who have GM vehicles that aren't equipped with OnStar, you can now buy an aftermarket version. OnStar FMV is available through consumer electronic stores, including Best Buy, and swaps your rear-view mirror for one equipped with OnStar. The over-the-counter OnStar system is now on over 90 million vehicles currently cruising the roads, according to GM. Earlier this week, it won a Good Housekeeping Seal.
