Worlds Collide: Audi Planning A Pickup Truck?

Pickup trucks. Luxury cars. These are two terms that don't tend to intertwine, save perhaps for auto dealership inventory sheets. There's really nothing luxurious about hard-driving, utilitarian haulers designed to truck gear, dirt and manure around the work site. Nor should there be.

But, lately, the terms have been appearing together every so often. BMW released its own bedded four-wheeler, though it revealed that it was meant only as an April Fool's prank. This week brings some photographic confirmation of another German luxo-ute: It's an Audi-branded pickup and it may be for real.

Auto Guide got a few pictures from an anonymous tipster that swears the car is a real, live project and not just a funny Photoshop prank. The pics show a rounded Audi nose and cabin planted in front of a bed. Basically it's as if someone guillotined the rear off an Audi Q7 SUV and added a rounded, diamond plate aluminum bed. It's every bit as weird and unseemly as April's BMW M3 ute.

Unfortunately, the tipster was generous with images but not as generous with information. It's unclear if this is an actual concept (Frankfurt Motor Show concept, perhaps?), a wacky garage project, a weird creation designed to drive parts and supplies around Ingolstadt or something else. We doubt Audi would copy BMW's playbook so closely as to make its own prank car, but the pickup definitely looks like a weird punch line.AutoGuide speculates that it could also be a new VW Anorak pickup all dolled up in Audi camo. We're just not sure and we can only wait and hope that some more info turns up soon.

Then again, does it really matter what it is? We highly doubt Audi will be selling it; and would you really want an Audi pickup, anyway? It's a head-turner, for sure, but not necessarily in a positive way. It's basically just a fun car to look at, shake your head and think 'WTH are those Germans smoking over there?'

It looks like it should be in the movie Mad Max. Why is Audi even trying to do a pickup? They should focus it through their VW brand and make a VW pickup. That would probably be more practical.
