Chevrolet Recalls Ten Thousand New Impalas!

It seems they really don't make 'em like they used to anymore. Either that or they just did a lot less recalling back in the good 'ole days. In what seems to be the summer of recalls, now it is General Motors' turn to bring some horses back to the stable. More than ten thousand 2012 Chevy Impalas are being recalled this month due to "misrouted" power steering hoses which have been placed dangerously close to the catalytic converter, thus melting the hose and igniting the power steering fluid, setting that brand new engine compartment ablaze.

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):

CHEVROLET / IMPALA 2012

Manufacturer:

GENERAL MOTORS LLC

Mfr's Report Date:

AUG 05, 2011

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number:

11V398000

NHTSA Action Number:

N/A

Component:

STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS

Potential Number of Units Affected:

10,344

Summary:

GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 CHEVROLET IMPALA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 19, 2011, THROUGH JULY 29, 2011. THE UPPER POWER STEERING HOSE MAY HAVE BEEN MISROUTED SO THAT IT CAN COME IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO AND/OR CONTACT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. WITH THE ENGINE ON, HEAT FROM THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER MAY MELT THE POWER STEERING HOSE.

Consequence:

POWER STEERING FLUID COULD FLOW ONTO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, AND AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE COULD OCCUR.

Remedy:

GM DEALERS WILL INSPECT TO ENSURE THAT THE UPPER POWER STEERING HOSE IS ROUTED CORRECTLY AND MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE AUGUST 12, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.

Notes:

GM'S SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER IS 11224. OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

Even if you are having your Impala in for routine maintenance, make sure you specifically ask the technicians to check out your power steering hoses to be sure they have been routed correctly, because an engine fire will ruin anyone's day.
