smart fortwo Electric Drive Gets Revamped For Frankfurt

Other cars, like the Nissan Leaf and Ford Focus Electric, may get all the ink, but they're not the only fully electric options on the market. Sure, the Mercedes-backed smart fortwo Electric Drive is a little goofy, and God forbid you ever get into a crash in the tiny two-seater, but it's an ultra-compact, fully electric ride that's hard to beat for city driving. Just think about how nice it must be to park that car on crowded city streets and at events.

An updated version of the smart fortwo Electric Drive will make its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next month. Mercedes has addressed some complaints in redesigning the EV.

The 2011 smart fortwo Electric Drive's small engine, 82-mile range and 62.5-mile top speed makes it okay for short city sprints, but kind of limit it for longer, freeway commutes. Mercedes has worked to address these shortcomings in the 2012 smart fortwo ED, boosting power, speed and range.

The 2012 model trades its 30 kW motor in for a more potent 55 kW Bosch unit. That increase doesn't sound particularly impressive on paper, but it helps boost the two-seater's top speed to 75 mph, which will definitely help the car navigate U.S. highways a little more readily. The range also increases to 86 miles thanks to a new 17.6 kWh battery pack.

The 2012 smart fortwo ED also gets faster charging, courtesy of an available 22-kW on-board charging system that Mercedes claims can fully charge the battery in under an hour. Unfortunately, that's not likely to make it over to the EV charging-barren U.S. any time soon, so we'll be stuck with the 8 hours or so worth of 220 V charging. A new 'Smart Drive' iPhone app will allow drivers to remotely control things like battery charging. The new car will also get a built-in iPhone dock and wireless integration.

The 2012 smart fortwo Electric Drive is set to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which opens to the press on September 13.
