Fisker Karma Deliveries Begin [Finally]

The Fisker Karma may not perform quite like the Bugatti Veyron just yet, but it is one of the most compelling plug-ins that we've seen yet. And after nothing but delay after delay after price increase after delay, it's finally making its way out to customers.

Despite reports that Leonardo DiCaprio would be the very first to receive his Karma, the automaker kept it a little closer to home for its first delivery. Fisker Chairman Ray Lane took the keys to the very first Karma (in somewhat of a creepy, over the top moment, if you ask me), and ushered in the official Fisker era. Lane's Karma is a 2012 Signature Series in 'Silver Mirage.'

Lane said of the Karma: "This is so much more than just another car. The Fisker Karma represents a new era for the automotive industry and I am proud to be driving the dream of all those who have worked so hard to bring this uniquely green and elegant vehicle to market."

The Karma gets direct motivation from two 201-hp electric motors connected to the rear axle. A 260-hp 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder serves as an on-board generator that recharges the lithium-ion battery pack. The car travels about 50 miles via battery power and up to 300 miles with both gas and electric power.

According to Fisker, the Karma can get up to 100 mpg and can hit 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. It tops out at over 125 mph. Last week, Henrik Fisker alluded to all kinds of additional power in future plug-ins, stating that a new multi-gear transmission could help to harness all the electric torque (the Karma has 959 lb-ft) toward Bugatti Veyron-like acceleration.

If you want to be one of the next Karma buyers, you're in for a wait. The company recently indicated that it is likely sold out through the end of the year.
