New Details on Ferrari 458 Spyder

We all know that a convertible version of the 458 Spyder is the next Ferrari on the docket. Ferrari told us so via Fiat. Apparently, the open-top version of Ferrari's award-winning mid-level coupe is coming pretty soon, because Maranello has already started showing it off to potential buyers. One such VIP has done a little yammering, providing a few details on the upcoming convertible.

According to a Team Speed forum post, Ferrari showed the 458 Italia Spyder to a select group last month. It showed a red-and-tan model and a black-and-tan model. A source that presumably attended the event reported that the 458 Spyder will make its debut this fall. We don't know for sure, but our money is on the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Production will begin in January, and first deliveries are scheduled in Europe by the end of the first quarter. U.K. sales will follow in the third quarter, and U.S. sales will begin sometime thereafter, though a specific time frame is still unavailable.

The Spyder will share the coupe's 562-hp 4.5-liter V-8 engine, but will get a few technological upgrades to distinguish itself. It will also get a new retractable hard-top, as previously rumored. Unlike other recent Spyder two-seaters, the 458 will not get a clear engine cover.

Forum member Wild Speed did his best impression of a police composite sketch in rendering the 458 Spyder based upon the source's description. You can see one above, but be sure to check out the original post for numerous flavors.
