Lamborghini Estoque To Spawn Four-Seat Convertible

It seems a little early to start talking about Lamborghini sedan spin-offs. After all, official word is that a potential sedan model is still in hot competition with an SUV for the coveted third spot in Lambo's line. So keep in mind this is a rumor built on top of a rumor.

According to Top Speed, Lamborghini is already planning a convertible version of its sedan. The convertible would hit the market about two years after the hard-topped model.

For months, we were under the impression that an Estoque-based Lambo sedan was under development. Chief Stephan Winkelmann all but said so last year. But late last month, a Car and Driver report stated that Lamborghini still wants to test prototypes of an SUV and sedan to decide which one to give the official green light. It turns out that while Winkelmann prefers a sedan, Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piech prefers an SUV.

Still, the rumor wagon must truck on, so, despite the fact that the sedan and SUV are neck and neck, more sedan rumors... The sedan convertible will debut as a concept in 2015, a year after the sedan itself debuts. The convertible will move to production the following year.

Unfortunately, the rumor appears completely based on an internal document that was widely publicized back in March. Given that the document detailed 10 years of Lamborghini production, it seemed like a bit of an unstable source back in March, but seems like a real stretch to base any new reports on here in July/August. I'm pretty sure Lamborghini won't be drawing from that exact playbook for 10 years without a little erasing and rewriting, so it looks like the Estoque convertible is as good as "maybe."

Perhaps more interesting (or less interesting considering it’s as speculative as the Estoque convertible report) is another Top Speed report from last month that Lambo plans to build a Sesto Elemento convertible by 2013. The report reads more like a plea to build a convertible Sesto than a confirmation that Lambo actually plans to do so, but it's hard to deny that a Sesto convertible would be sweet. Considering that Lambo only plans a very limited number of the hard-topped Sesto, a Sesto Spyder seems far from a sure thing.

Check out the two Top Speed source links for a look at what those cars might look like.
