The Car Show: Did You Watch It?

In announcing its debut episode Wednesday, I mentioned The Car Show’s key to success—don't be Top Gear—and it seems TCS has taken my advice. Top Gear is more of an entertaining show (at least the BBC version is) that tries to be automotive, whereas The Car Show aims to be an automotive show that tries to be entertaining. The eclectic group of qualified misfits they’ve assembled creates a dynamic group that almost any car enthusiast can relate to in some way.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dan Neil is revered as the resident expert on all things cars but is often quickly dismissed for being too much of a snob. “TheSmokingTire.com” founder Matt Farah is also very knowledgeable and his more down-to-earth perspective is a good counter to Neil’s elitism. Six-foot-eleven-inch, former NBA champ John Salley is likeable but clueless, providing an outsider’s point of view—“how many miles to the gallon do you get on this (Rolls Royce)?” And although comedian Adam Coralla is the star of the show, his biggest contribution is his quick, witty interjections that often rescue the show from becoming too serious and boring.

Overall, we enjoyed TCS and look forward to seeing more from them.

If you don't have SPEED, don’t worry; episodes of The Car Show will be available on Hulu.

Here’s Wednesday night’s premier episode. Leave a comment and tell us what you think about The Car Show.
