Porsche 928 Revival Looking Likely

Rumors and reports of a new Porsche 928 have been on the table (and Interwebz) for years now.  According to Autocar, a new front-engined GT coupe, inspired by the original 928 of the 70s, 80s and 90s, is indeed on the way.

No official confirmation, but Autocar has gleaned some anonymously sourced information about the GT coupe, which will possibly be named the 929. It will be built upon a shorter version of the next-generation Panamera's platform, and will feature a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive configuration. The replacement Panamera is likely to come in 2014 or 2015, so the 929 will follow after that. Both coupe and convertible 929 models are planned.

Little is known about the styling or powering of the 929, but it will likely sport somewhere between 500 to 550 horses in order to match competitors like the Bentley Continental GT. We hope the styling will borrow more heavily from the 918 than the 911, since pretty much every other car in Porsche's lineup looks like a different size and shape of 911. Maybe they could even bring back the flush, circular headlamps from the original 928 and really shake things up. But, knowing Porsche, it'll probably just be a new body with a 911 mug.

Of course, a never-actually-happened 928 was supposed to spin-off the current Panamera's platform, so this new 929 could disappear just the same way.

The original 928 launched in 1978 and spun its wheels on the market for 18 years. The V-8 powered coupe was envisioned as a replacement for an aging 911, but ended up being long outlived by Porsche's staple. Between its round, flush-to-the-hood headlamps and rounded rear-end, the 928 boasted some of Porsche's most unique styling elements of recent memory.

Porsche is also expected to deliver other Panamera-based body styles including a shooting brake and a larger wagon. Yep, that's right, the future could very well bring a Porsche station wagon.

What's not clear is if the 929 is the same as the supercar that has been rumored since last fall. That car was expected to be a mid-engined supercar in the vein of the Ferrari 458 GTB and McLaren MP4-12C. It would be positioned in the territory between the 911 and the 918.

Will Porsche produce both cars? Neither car? Or will the new 929 serve in place of the mid-engined model? More questions than answers at this point.
