Kia Gets Juice: Two V-8 Concepts Coming in Next Year

Korean cars have really come a long way in the past few decades. Growing up, I remember the brand "Hyundai" being equivalent to "cheap, Korean junk." But, more recently, Hyundai has established itself as a manufacturer of award-winning and even luxurious automobiles like the Equus and Genesis. It's a whole 'nother Hyundai.

Hyundai has even started holding its own in the true performance sports cars segment. While the Genesis might not have the history and panache of cars like the Chevy Camaro or Ford Mustang, it is able to hold its own against and even beat out those American bad boys. With the 2012 Genesis R-Spec, Hyundai is even making a push to compete with muscle-car halos like the Mustang GT, though the 5.0-liter engine is currently offered only in Genesis Sedan (not Coupe) form.

But Kia, the other name in Korean autos, has been a few steps behind. It hasn't earned the brand respect of Hyundai, doesn't have a venerable sports coupe, and doesn't have a V-8 halo. According to a rumor from U.K. publication What Car?, that's all about to change. Kia will unveil not one, but two V-8-powered, RWD sports car concepts within the next half-year.

According to the report, Kia feels that it needs an exciting halo car to draw attention to the brand. And that car may be derived by 2015 from one of two V-8 sport coupe concepts that it allegedly has in development. The first concept is expected at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show and the second will follow at the North American International Auto Show in January.

Little is known about either car, but they're expected to share a V-8 with another rumored Kia car—a V-8 sedan that may also debut in Frankfurt. That model is expected to share both underpinnings and motivation with the Hyundai Genesis sedans, and the sports coupe concepts are likely to share either the 4.6-liter V-8 engine or new direct-injected 5.0-liter V-8, or possibly both, with the Genesis.

If Kia does indeed have a V-8 coupe or two in the works, we'll undoubtedly be hearing more before September.

Korean cars are getting better, American cars are falling apart.

The new Camaro is very well made. Despite its cheap interior and the fact that you can't see out of it.
