Nearly 500 Morgan Threewheelers Already Sold

Remove one wheel from your average car, strap a V-Twin motorcycle engine to a retro-styled two-seater with tubular aluminum frame, and slap on a $40,000 price tag, and you have the makings of a real novelty vehicle, not necessarily a big seller. But, so far, Morgan has been rather successful in marketing that exact vehicle to buyers. Four hundred-eighty such buyers have already stepped to the plate and put a deposit down on their very own car... motorcycle... Threewheeler.

The Threewheeler has been so successful, Morgan believes that the model is improving not only the reputation of Morgan itself, but the reputation of British automobiles in general. It plans to sell around a 1,000 cars this year thanks largely to the initial success of the Threewheeler.

Chief Charles Morgan summed it up: "People used to look at us as a maker of interesting classics. But now we're doing something everyone is interested in. We're part of a wider manufacturing rival in the UK and our great strength is in building highly technical and sophisticated products that are in a niche."

The Threewheeler is definitely in a niche. It's classified as a motorcycle, but uses a two (front) one-wheel (rear) configuration. With its lightweight aluminum construction, it weighs in at around 1,000 lbs. and offers quick performance, hitting 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds. Thanks to its small 115-hp powerplant and light build, it also delivers around 50 mpg. It may not be the most practical car/bike on the lot, but for someone looking for a fun, funky commuter or showpiece car, it's definitely a unique option.

Morgan plans to continue its ascendance into name-brand manufacturing, introducing a new car each year. It will launch the production version of its EvaGT grand tourer in 2013. It showed a concept version of that car in Pebble Beach last summer.

To all that, we say: The more Morgan the merrier.

This is really a cool ride but unless you live next to Jay Leno don't I think you will see one in your neighbors driveway!
