Porsche To Launch Sub-Boxster Roadster

Want a Porsche without much of the Porsche? Stuttgart is reportedly planning on bringing back a sub-Boxster entry level roadster that will be the spiritual successor to the 356. According to an AutoBild report, it will launch within three years or so.

The new roadster, which is being called the 550, is rumored to be under development for a summer 2014 debut. It will base about 8,000 euros below the Boxster at 39,000 euros ($55,400). Along with price, the entry level Porsche will lose considerable horsepower from the Boxster, dropping down to around 200 ponies by way of a small, 1.6-liter flat-six turbo. That engine will be mounted in the middle of the car.

Though the car will bring historical credibility in succeeding the 356, Porsche's first production car made between 1948 and 1965, I find a 200-hp, $55,000, cheaper-looking Boxster/Cayman/911 pretty underwhelming. I can think of a lot of cars that I'd rather drive that cost significantly less. I can also think of a lot of cars I'd rather see coming out of Stuttgart than this 550.

Luckily, Porsche has some other, more interesting cars on the way. The 918 Spyder is the green flagship currently under development, and rumor indicates that Porsche may complement that with another high-end sports coupe just below.

The good news is, Porsche will have a little more for everyone within a few short years.
