1990 Honda Accord Nears Million Mile Mark

A man from Norway, Maine (yes, such a place-name exists and the pictures demonstrate why) is taking his 1990 Honda Accord above and beyond any insignificant six digit limit speculatively put on the odometer. Joe LoCicero intends to break the 1-million mark by September 2011. Seeing Joe’s initiative, Honda has taken this opportunity to put out a press release showcasing the reliability of Honda automobiles. As we say in the schoolyard, or the occasional jailhouse, the proof is in the pudding.

Since he purchased the vehicle in 1996, Joe has racked up an average of 62,500 miles a year. Yes, that’s nearly 5 times greater than most people. Around the 300,000 mile mark on his odometer, Joe began taking detailed records of his maintenance and vehicle achievements—including 661 photos of his odometer. Yikes.

Fortunately for his Honda Accord, Joe worked for 18 years as a vehicle maintenance technician and 14 years as a claims adjuster. Both of which have attributed to his overall vehicle health, but perhaps more helpful, Joe has read and followed his 1990 owner’s manual and maintenance schedule to the letter. He checks fluid levels with extreme prejudice (aka weekly) and switches them out every 5,000 miles or based on the seasonal Norwegian climate.

“Joe’s journey is a testament to Honda’s reliability and how people have come to count on Honda for more than 50 years to get them where they need to go,” proclaimed Tom Peyton, Honda brand manager for American Honda Motors.

For fans of Joe’s sacred quest, new content featuring his pursuit toward reaching the millionaire’s club will be featured on Honda’s official Facebook page. Joe plans to achieve his goal in September, long before any blizzards or glaciers begin to reclaim their icy domain. Time will tell if Joe reaches this wicked neat milestone, but either way breaking the 900,000 mark is no easy feat. An accomplishment worthy of a special kind of New England nickname—used for true salt-laden winter road warriors only, the Mainer winter rat.

It seems even more amazing considering the amount of salt and extreme cold weather. It would be interesting to map out the higher mileage cars to see where they are geographically.
