BMW Frozen Black Special Edition M3

BMW of North America just announced a twenty-car production run of identical 2011 Frozen Black Edition M3 Coupes lined up for the good ole’ US of A. Although the 2010 M3 received similar treatment with the Frozen Gray Coupe, in 2011 the Frozen Black edition will feature red brake calipers, 19-nch GTS wheels, Novillo leather upholstery, red-on-black juxtaposed stitching, “carbon leather” trim, and, of course… matte black exterior paint with gloss black accents.

Aesthetics aside, the 2011 Frozen Black Edition will be powered by the same mechanics in normal M3 models: a 4.0 L, 414 horsepower V8 engine, paired with BMW’s M double-clutch transmission. Apparently though, some changes to the Frozen Black Edition actually make this model faster than normal, run-of-the-mill M3s. Changes to vehicle wheel size (and let’s not forget a more sinister wheel color), a 10mm reduction in vehicle ride height through an included Competition Package, and enhanced programming (which equates to higher thresholds for the M Dynamic Mode) all add up to a faster 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, rather than the normal M3’s 4.7 second run.

But, these changes don’t come cheap. BMW will produce a total of 20 Frozen Black Edition M3s and the production window looks to be very small. BMW M enthusiasts may call to reserve the first nineteen models starting at 11:30 AM EST on Thursday, June 16, 2011. The twentieth, and final car, will be held by BMW of North America and may be sold at a later date. MSRP for one of these custom-tailored exotics was announced by BMW at $79,650. In case you’re still interested, BMW's Frozen Black Edition ordering hotline is 1-800-245-4269.

While individual models should be available for delivery in late June 2011, the production run will end abruptly at the conclusion of July. Oh, and, by the way, that barely sub-$80,000 price tag does not include an $875 destination and handling fee or the $1,300 federal gas guzzler tax.

However, in exchange for spending some serious cash, purchasers get exclusivity and all kinds of glory points. Buyers can be sure their 2011 Frozen Black Special Edition M3 is one of only twenty in the entire United States, and possibly one of only nineteen individually owned. Indeed, the Frozen Black Edition is one special M3, and certainly only makes sense to purchase for the true black-suit-and-shades-wearing enthusiast.
