BMW Teases 2012 1-Series Hatchback

Not quite as exciting as the pictures of the unclothed SLS AMG roadster that Mercedes released last week, but a teaser of an upcoming German luxury car just the same, some new pictures of what looks to be the upcoming BMW 1-Series hatchback have hit the Web. In fact, an entire website called 2originals.com is dedicated to teasing the model.

The website shows what appear to be three- and five-door versions of the hatchback covered up in bright cloth. The phrase "One Origin, Two Originals" points to the idea that these are indeed two versions of the 1-Series.

Outside of that, it's all pretty metaphorical, with a series of videos depicting pairs of brothers and sisters in continuance of the theme. Then there's language like this: "One is dynamic, the other, artistic. One enjoys the city life; the other enjoys the great outdoors. Six pairs of siblings, each with distinct personalities, hand-picked for being real life examples of ONE ORIGIN. TWO ORIGINALS."

The "two originals" theme leads Autoblog Italy to speculate that the three- and five-door models may be more differentiated than in years past, encompassing unique styling and engine options.

BMW Blog reported late last month that the 1-Series hatch would be debuted in "just weeks," and the timing of this teaser campaign supports the idea that launch is near.

The new 1-Series hatchback is expected to get a little larger than the current generation, featuring a longer wheelbase, widened rear track, and broader shoulders. It will also have some new design language including a front-end with new grille, headlamps, and bumper.

The 1-Series was spied doing some testing in Nurburgring last month, and it looks like BMW might be ready to debut the hatch before the month is out. The public debut is expected to follow later this year in Frankfurt.

Take a look at 2originals.com if you have any interest in seeing more of BMW's teaser campaign.
