New One-Off Ferrari Super America 45 Announced

It's been a while since we've seen a one-off Ferrari special edition. Too long. The last one that I seem to recall is the Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta (pictured), a 599 GTB converted by Ferrari's own Special Projects division to look like the Ferrari in the 1968 film Toby Dammit. That model debuted in late 2009, so it's high time we got a new privately commissioned one-off to gawk at.

Luckily, just such a car will fill that role at the upcoming Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. And it will be just as "super" as the P540. It's called the Super America 45.

Little detail has been offered on the car, but a press release preview of the show said of it:

"A recent and fascinating trend in the rarefied world of top end Ferrari collectors is the commissioning of one off bespoke version of high end models from Italian coach builders. Several ‘special clients' have approached Pininfarina (and others) in recent years to build uniquely styled cars, an idea that goes back to the fifties went customers like film director Roberto Rossellini had a special car built for his wife, Ingrid Bergman. The Villa d Este is the natural setting for the exposure of such special vehicles and as well as the Glickenhaus P4/5 this year we have this very special Ferrari Super America belongs to the New York."

Oddly, the press release lists the Super America 45's engine as a 6.0-liter six-cylinder engine—not particularly 2011 Ferrari. Either it's a mistake, or the customer wanted to experiment with a greener, more earth-friendly Ferrari. But who the heck puts money into a one-off Ferrari to walk away with a V6?

Outside of the fact that it was commissioned by a New York customer, little else is known about the Super America. From the statement above, it appears to be customized through a third-party shop—presumably Pininfarina—rather than Ferrari Special Projects. Let's just hope it doesn't share the diarrhea-brown color scheme of the Superfast Aperta. That would be a tragedy.

The Super America 45 will be displayed alongside a wide field of interesting concepts and customs. Other cars set to appear include the Audi Quattro concept from last year's Paris Motor Show, the Infiniti Etherea from this year's Geneva show, and the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus P4/5, a Pininfarina one-off based on the Ferrari Enzo

The event gets underway on May 20.
