Whatever Floats Your Boat

For the past 10 years the people of Lakeland have had the pleasure of hosting the Lake Mirror Classic car show at beautiful Lake Mirror. The show is one of the country's leading classic car shows and is always a firm favorite with the public. This year’s feature display showcased European cars from the art deco era. In the midst of all the beautiful cars from the brass era, pre-war, post-war, domestic sports cars, and muscle cars there are always a few cars that are of particular interest.

Somewhere near the beautiful classic boats both in the water and on display, you will find a crowd gathering around the Amphicars. The only show that allows lake access makes Lake Mirror Classic a favorite for the owners of these cool little cars. The Amphicar is a truly unique creation that was produced in Berlin Germany from 1962 to 1967. Approx 4500 were produced, most went to USA. The amphicar is capable of over 70mph on road, 8 knots on water. There is a strong enthusiast following for these cars, just Google “Amphicar” and you will find plenty of clubs online with photos and information on these cars.

While speaking with the owner of one of these little cars, we asked “What do you like the most about your Amphicar,” and without hesitation, he said “I really like taking people for a ride that are not aware that the car can go in the water, and watch them freak out when I turn off the road and head straight into the water.” I wonder if the owners ever come close to driving their other cars into the water by accident? I guess we will have to ask them next year.

It's no surprise that year after year these cars draw so much attention away from the mainstream classics, after all, how often do you get to see a ½ car-½ boat?
