Chevy Volt Is World Green Car of the Year

Boy, I'm getting a little sick of the Chevy Volt. It reminds me of that annoying jock-geek in elementary school/junior high/high school/life—the one that captained the football and baseball teams, was in the top 5 in grade-average percentile, and was basically just a few steps away from being a multi-millionaire with a swimsuit model wife. Puke.

The Volt's already swept major awards like the Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year and the 2011 North American Car of the Year, and now it's back in the spotlight as the World Green Car of the Year. The award was bestowed last week at the 2011 New York Auto Show.

Obviously, Chevy/GM representatives were pretty happy about the award. Rick Scheidt, VP of Chevy marketing, said: "The selection of the Volt as the World Green Car is a further proof point of the fuel-efficient technologies that are now being offered by the Chevrolet brand around the world. This award, and the others that have preceded it, validate the efforts of the development team to build a truly remarkable vehicle with the potential to transform transportation around the globe."

In case, you think I'm exaggerating, here's a list of the Volt's recent accomplishments:

  • 2011 North American Car of the Year
  • Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year
  • Green Car Journal 2011 Green Car of the Year
  • Car and Driver 10Best for 2011
  • Ward’s AutoWorld 10 Best Engines for 2011
  • Automobile Magazine 2011 Automobile of the Year
  • 2010 Breakthrough Technology, by Popular Mechanics

Yeah, we're getting a little sick of it. But I guess we can't hate on it too much. There really aren't many competitors that combine the fuel economy (EPA 60 mpg) and versatility of the Volt. The Nissan Leaf beats it handily in the efficiency department, but is just too much of an impractical one-note to truly compete in the current marketplace where electric charging stations are few and far between.

The Chevy Volt beat out the Leaf, along with the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition. The three finalists were selected at the Geneva Motor Show. A panel of auto journalists from around the world voted to determine the winner.

Bad news for anyone that's as sick of reading about the Volt's laundry list of accomplishments as I am: it'll be eligible for the 2012 World Car of the Year Award, thanks to the fact that it goes on sale in Europe and Asia later this year.
