45 Years Of Camaro Inspire Special Edition

Nothing quite inspires special-edition automobiles like birthdays. First introduced in 1967 as an answer to the Ford Mustang, the Chevy Camaro was a venerable muscle-car competitor through the muscle-car heyday, on through the 80s and 90s up until its cancellation in 2002. The Camaro made its grand comeback in 2009 and has experienced great success ever since, giving the Mustang a run for its money.

Of course Chevy wouldn't let a 45th birthday of one of its icons slip by unnoticed. The company introduced the 2012 Camaro 45th Anniversary Edition earlier this week.

The car will feature GM's new LFX engine, a 323-hp direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 engine that goes into production this summer. That engine delivers an extra 11 horses without sacrificing any mpg—Chevy's still expecting to rack up 30 mpg thanks in part to the fact that the new engine is some 20 lbs. lighter than the 2011 V6.

Other upgrades to the Camaro's ride include FE4 suspension for better handling, an upgrade that will also be equipped to the 2012 Camaro SS, 20-inch wheels wrapped neatly in P245/45R20 tires up front and P275/40R20 in back, and a Rear Vision Package with rear-view cameras.

In terms of body upgrades, Chevy adds a new rear spoiler, RS tail lamps, and red-and-silver rally striping set against a Carbon Flash Metallic paint job. 45th Anniversary badging can be found under the front fender emblems.

Inside, a jet black interior is offset by a white instrument panel and door trim inserts. The seats are trimmed in leather and identified with 45th Anniversary badging. Red, blue, and white stitching provide a visual contrast to the deep black on the seats, shift knob, steering wheel, door armrests, and console top. Badging can also be found on the steering wheel, sill plates, and instrument panel.

The anniversary package will be offered on Camaro 2LT and 2SS models. It will make its world debut at the Camaro5 Fest II on Friday in Arizona.

And for those who prefer more power than the 45th has to offer, don't forget that the 550-hp Camaro ZL1 will launch next year.
