Rolls Royce Helps Mini With Special Edition

BMW brands are getting along famously. The big boy in the group has reached out a helping hand to the little guy. Rolls Royce teamed with Mini to present the ‘Mini Inspired by Goodwood’ special edition, which they'll debut at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show next week. Rolls oversaw the design of the interior, crafting a Mini Cooper with premium, Rolls-Royce-inspired materials and equipment.

We'll look at this one inside out, for obvious reasons. The upgraded Cooper gets elements pulled straight out of Rolls Royce order books—walnut burr veneers on the instrument panel and door handles; cornsilk beige leather on the center console, seats, door sides, and pillar trim; lambswool fleece carpets; cashmere-lined roof and sun visor; and piano-black-finished steering wheel and center console. The car also has Harman Kardon speakers standard. Open the door and you'd swear you were looking in a Rolls Royce—or you would if it wasn't so damn small.

Rolls Royce's delicate hand extends to the exterior, as well. The metallic Diamond Black paint was developed by Goodwood.

Mini-wise, the car will also be offered in Mini's Reef Blue metallic paint, and will combine exterior elements from the Cooper S and Cooper D.

In terms of engine, it's all Cooper S: the Goodwood edition gets the 181-hp turbo engine from the S, putting it at 62 mph in seven seconds. Six-speed manual transmission comes standard and an automatic is available as an option.

Mini plans to build 1000 Goodwood Coopers at its Oxford plant. Price has not yet been announced, but thanks to the premium Rolls upgrading, it's expected to fall in the 50,000-pound ($81,400) range.
