Jeep Pickup Is Here... Kind Of

Rumors of a pickup version of the Jeep Wrangler have been surfacing for years. Chrysler is still thought to be considering the model and only stoked the flames when it introduced a Mopar special edition called the NuKizer 715 at last year's Easter Jeep Safari. Fiat/Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne was later quoted as strongly supporting that model for production, and the jeep/off-road world has waited for official word ever since.

Well, we now have an official Jeep pickup. Only it's not a production Wrangler pickup, but an aftermarket conversion kit offered by Mopar. Still, it's a step in the right direction.

Mopar will again be displaying a Jeep pickup at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, which starts on April 16. This one will be called the Jeep JK-8 Indpendence, and unlike last year's NuKizer, will feature a kit that will be available for purchase. Pricing has not yet been announced, but Mopar indicates that the kit will be available to owners of the four-door Wrangler. The company indicates that owners can install it in as little as a weekend or can let the dealer/specialty shop do the work.

Mopar will have six new kitted-out Chrysler vehicles to show in Moab. We already took a brief look at the Wrangler Pork Chop and Wrangler Renegade. Mopar indicates that it derived the odd name "Pork Chop" because it "cut the pork" off the model, eliminating 850 lbs.

Other models that Mopar/Jeep detailed:

The Jeep Canyon Compass gets more off-road-worthy with bigger tires, two extra inches of clearance, and rock plates.

The Wrangler Blue Crush is designed to be versatile enough to endure both desert racing and rock crawling. It has a 540-hp Hemi V8.

The Ram Run Runner turns the Dodge Ram 1500 truck into a full-blown desert racer

We'll see more when the Easter Jeep Safari gets underway (April 16 to 24). The pickup kit will go on sale this summer.

Here's a video look at the JK-8 Independence:
