BMW Reveals 2012 6-Series

BMW is going to officially launch the 2012 6-Series Coupe at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month, but a few journalists have seen the car in Munich ahead of the show. The coupe adds a fixed roof and a Hofmeister Kink to the convertible version.

The coupe's front fascia has LED headlamps and optional triple-element fog lamps. Power comes from a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 that makes 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission gets all that power to the rear wheels.

Expect 0-60 times of 4.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour. Pricing should check in at a little bit under $90,000 when the coupe goes on sale this fall.

The 6-Series has always been a bit of an anomaly: It's not as popular as the 5-Series or 7-Series, but it's still a car that can offer a lot of power for the money (albeit, a lot of money). High-end sports coupe buyers will likely give it a long look.

You can't expect the 6-Series to be a mainstream seller for BMW, but it is a flagship car for a company that positions itself as an enthusiast's automaker.

BMW launched the convertible first, because it sells better in the U.S., accounting for 60 percent of 6-Series sales. But that doesn't mean that the lighter 6 won't do well for the company.
