Audi Quattro Concept Moving Toward Production

It looks like the Audi Quattro concept debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show is on its way toward production. While it has yet to be officially confirmed, Autocar reports that Audi is quite close to giving the go-ahead. Launch is expected as early as 2013.

Essentially an ultra-light RS5, the Quattro uses an aluminum space frame, aluminum body panels, and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic hood and trunk to tear out 660 lbs. In its Paris form, the model used a 408-hp 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo engine and six-speed manual transmission.

Though Audi said the car was simply designed as a nod to Quattro's 30th birthday when it launched it in Paris, the company has moved closer and closer to production, most recently building a working prototype. While Audi board members still have to test the prototype before giving it the official green light, Autocar reports that company sources are confident that the Quattro will see limited production.

The Quattro will lose even more weight thanks to a shortened wheelbase and lightweight interior components. It should weigh around 2,866 lbs. when all is said and done. Considering that the Quattro's power-to-weight ratio will be close to that of the R8 5.2 FSI, the production version should be a blast to drive, with 60 mph coming in less than 4 seconds.
